The camera webUI is easy to use, playback is simple, easy to use and powerful with 1-10x fast forward feature! Moreover the recorded video captures are sharp. No color cast issues as most IP cameras will have without the IR-CUT Filter. With its support for Wireless B/G/N or Wireless-N only, we cannot find any reasons why you shouldn't own 1 for your home surveillance needs!

SOLO is priced @ $420 per unit, PRO is priced @ $550 per unit, PRO-HD is priced @

In this review, we will show you all about Slingmedia's Slingbox SOLO, showing you the wonderful features about it. And of cos, video samples we taken from an iPhone using 3G & WIFI. Not forgetting sample videos from an iPad!

So, What is a Slingbox SOLO?

Well, the Slingbox SOLO looks like the picture on the left. Its size is smaller than the previous classic model. You can see the difference with the comparison photo below. The grey box on top of the Slingbox SOLO is the Slingbox Classic. My setup here is linked to a Starhub's Hub Station.

This little device allows the streaming of your cable TV box channel that you have subscribed, across the internet to your devices such as notebooks, computers or mobile devices, even iPads. Yes, you read me correctly, even iPads, but currently, its a x2 screen expansion from the original version of iPhone. We hope Slingmedia launches the iPad version soon. Sample video quality can be viewed at the bottom of the review.

Here's some view of the Slingbox, as compared to the classic, this model is much more slicker in design and doesn't take up much space. More importantly, the heat generated by this new unit is not as much as the classic.

What is the common integration in Singapore?

The Slingbox SOLO is mainly used by individual to stream the video contents from their Starhub or MIOTV box to themselves while they are overseas or on the move so that they can keep in touch with the local news or programs. Some uses it to pamper kids on the move if they get restless using their mobile devices.

What mobile devices are supported?

Quite a number of devices from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Windows Mobiles, iPhones, and even
the Android are supported. Head down to their uk website to view a list of compatible phones.
On our end, we tested with Nokia N95, HTC TyTN II, HTC HD2, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3Gs, and even the iPad 3G+WIFI. Major Netbooks, Laptops and Macs are supported as well.

How's the video streaming like?

Enuff said, watch the following recording in HD and judge for yourselves! Note that videos may be compressed to lower resolution at individual hosting sites. Actual videos are much sharper and clearer in image.

What are the factors affecting streaming?

Well, important question here! The major factor affecting the streaming is your ISP's internet connection! The upload speed from your ISP is important where the Slingbox is being setup. The higher the upload speed, the better the streaming is sent up to the internet. The viewer's end will depend on the download speed, the higher the download speed, you get to receive

the video faster.

Typically, for normal viewing, minimum recommendation is average 756kbps - 1Mbps Upload speed while download speed of above 2Mbps would be nice on 3G.

What are the limitation of Slingbox SOLO?

The Slingbox SOLO support only 1 input devices, if you need multiple input, you will need to consider the Slingbox HD. Both the devices supports only 1 to 1 viewing, meaning to say, you cannot share this to multiple users and allow viewing at the same time. Well, something that will make the ISP happy. In fact, we don't really classify this as a limitation.

Another limitation is that if you change the channel on the Slingbox, you will change the channel on the Setup Box (MIOTV or Starhub's Cable Box). So, if you are setting up this using a common box with family in the living room, you might spoilt your family's viewing pleasure when you change channel. So, we highly recommend you to have a seperate box for such viewing.

Where can I get them in Singapore Or Malaysia?

Review of Aztech HW553

In our first review posting, we will give you our honest review/hands-on experience on the Aztech HW553 Wireless-N 3G router.

In our review, we uses a E1750 USB dongle from Starhub's using 7.2Mbps Plan, we also uses an USB 5V adapter cable (which we found from one of our old USB device) instead of the original 5V power adapter. This is to prove the portability of the router without the default 5V power adapter.

The router itself is very light weight, weighing at about 100grams only and fits into any brief case easily, as you can see from the comparison picture below against an iPhone 3G. It is very well suited for any business users to bring along and use it to share with any one, not restricted by the 5 users limitation from a MIFI device.

The router comes with Wireless-N @ 300Mbps and has 2 x Ethernet Ports on the back of the router and 2 x USB2.0 Port (1 for the Modem, 1 for Printer or storage device). One of the Ethernet port can be configured to support WAN connection to a ADSL/Cable Modem. This can also be achieved using the USB Port at the back. As you can see from the picture, the USB on the top of the unit can be flip to accept a 3G dongle. It could also be used a a USB Port for other devices if you decides to use the unit as a WAN router connecting to a ADSL/Cable modem.

Here is a picture of the unit in action, all powered up and connected using power supply from a Laptop's

USB connection and connected to Starhub's 3G network.

The router has 3 indicator lights on it. Mainly the WAN Connection, Wireless Connection, and Power Indicator (From Top to Bottom).

Web Interface wise, it uses the same interface as the HW550-3G, only difference is the availability of a total of 5 ports (1WAN & 4 LAN) vs 2 ports on the HW553, not forgetting the size.

So, price wise, this baby is tagged at S$119 on major IT retail outlets. Not bad for one that is portable and allows the use of USB power to power the unit up.

Conclusion:

We loved this nifty little unit, very portable and easy to configure.

Our Wish List for this router:

What we are looking forward for this unit is to have the 5V supply cable being part of the package so that it will really become a truth portable 3G router. Couple it with the newer laptops with 8 hours battery life, I'm sure this router will provide the mobility internet hotspot for professionals working on the move in a team.
